The Lazhvard Basin

The Lazhvard Basin was a commission for a house in the Arts & Crafts architectural style. In this case, the starting point was the beautiful stained glass window in the bathroom, with it's delicate tones of blue and green. I made a connection between the lead lines on the window and the stylised lines of an Indian stone basin which had caught my attention on a recent trip to the subcontinent. I played with the possibilities and came up with a leafy frieze, which I highlighted with a wonderful duotone glaze in green and blue, to link it back to the stained glass window.

The ultimate translation of Lapis Lazuli means, literally, the “stone of Lazhvard”. I chose to name this basin the Lazhvard basin because of the richness of the blue-green glaze.
