The Lotus Flower Basin

The lotus flower or waterlily is an ancient symbol. With its bright fragrant flowers and broad floating leaves, it grows in muddy waters and rises above the surface to bloom with remarkable beauty. Untouched by the impurity, the lotus represents purity of heart and mind as well as long life, health, honor and good luck.

Particularly significant in India, the lotus flower is associated with the goddess of fortune and prosperity, Maha Lakshmi, who sits on a fully blossomed lotus flower, symbolizing beauty, knowledge, enlightenment and everything that is good.

Inspired by all these desirable qualities, I designed this basin as a wedding present for an Indian couple. I set out to capture the lotus flower’s symbolism and transformed earthy clay into an object of beauty which would bring pleasure to the daily experience of running water over one’s hands.
