The Tortoise Shell Basin

Back in 1991, I sailed from southern Spain to the Galapagos Islands in the Pacific, and there discovered the islands’ marvellous giant tortoises. This basin tries to capture the rugged beauty, texture and hues of a tortoise shell.

I chose to apply the patterned surface to the inside of the basin, where it could be more easily appreciated and enjoyed. This is also an example of how an inspirational texture can be applied imaginatively to a new context, to create something completely new and out of the ordinary.

The basin is finished with a rich stoneware glaze, whose tones vary with the thickness of application. I used it to highlight the design as well as echo the age of an ancient tortoise shell.
